A £3.4 million project to replace a pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Wey in Guildford has increased in cost with a further £450,000 now needed to build a new one.
Guildford Borough Council’s executive has been warned it does not have a “bottomless pit of money” by a councillor following its decision to move nearly half a million pounds from other budgets to plug the funding gap.
The replacement of the footbridge, which links Walnut Tree Close on the west side of the river to Bedford Road on the east side, has been a long-term aspiration of the council.
The council previously said the existing bridge is too narrow for the pedestrians and cyclists using it.
