Lewis Carroll

Lewis Carroll (1832-1898), the author of Alice in Wonderland and Alice throught the Looking glass is buried in Guildford. He also owned a house, Chestnuts by the Castle Grounds.

Two statues commemorate his association with the town and Guildford Museum possesses a number of artefacts associated with the author.

Alice in Wonderland was published in 1865 and three years later following the death of his father Carroll became head of the family. Needing a home for his six unmarried sisters he bought Chestnuts and was a frequent visitor to Guildford for the remainder of his life, giving talks around the town and preaching in St Mary’s Church. He died on 14th January 1898 whilst staying with his sisters and was buried in the town cemetery on the Mount
