University, Cathedral and Guildown

The Portsmouth Road travels south passing the Guildown Estate with many fine arts and crafts houses. Further on it passes through St Catherine’s village with the medieval St Catherine’s Chapel perched on the hilltop.

Going west the old road out of Guildford climbs steeply up the Mount. It passes the town cemetery with the grave of Lewis Carroll and Bookers Tower, an early nineteenth century folly. From the Mount there are spectacular views towards the cathedral with Farnham Road in the foreground. The road dates from the 18th century and provided an easier route out of the town. The Victorian buildings are the original Royal Surrey County Hospital which expanded in the 1980s and is now near the cathedral
