Pages and Posts have a link to Categories which you can, obviously use to categorise your pages and posts. Categories can also be linked to Navigation items on the Main Menu and they can be used to focus Ivory Search. In this article I explain how I am using them on this site.
Categories
In the WordPress Admin Menu click Pages or Posts and Select Categories. Use this page to create new categories. Once created these will appear on the right hand menu when you create a page and post. Select one or more to categorise your page
Menu Items
Click Appearance > Menus to get the page for creating manus. You create a menu item and link it to a link, a post, a category
Ivory Search
When you create a search box you can set it to only return pages or posts assigned to a particular category.

In a large cataloguing system you would have loads of categories. For example you might have type of person e,g, architect, solider etc or type of building e,g, station, church, castle etc. I decided not to have loads of categories. Instead I will try using a twitter -like hashtag system and set of pages recording the categories. When you click on the menu for People, Places, Events or themes you will go to a master page which lists the key people and “types”, with hyperlinks pulling up posts by hashtag.
